What’s in a name?

Posted in I Miseducation with tags , , , , on 06/18/2013 by cabring

The UP College of Business Administration has been officially renamed as the Cesar Emilio Aguinaldo Virata School of Business. There’s some debate going on about the legality of this move, but I don’t wish to add more fuel to the fire by unleashing my own barrage of academically-disguised expletives. Instead, I’ll defer to the wisdom of the administration and just propose that the following suggestions be considered in support of the current initiative:

  • The Benigno Simeon Cojuangco Aquino III School of Neoliberal Economics;
  • The Ferdinand Edralin Marcos College of Martial Law;
  • The Vicente Castelo Sotto III Creative Writing Center;
  • The Liwayway Gawgaw Tapia College of Education;
  • The Manuel “Lito” Lapid College of Superhuman Kinetics;
  • The UP MAROONONGS (to replace MAROONS; pampataas ng confidence levels, esp for the basketball team);
  • The Gloria Macapagal Arroyo National College of Public Administreyshen and Governance;
  • The Wilfredo Buendia Revillame College of Mass Hysterical Communications;
  • The Lucio Tan School of Contractual Labor and Industrial Relations;
  • The Henry Sy, Sr. University Shopping Center (pushing for “Mart“);
  • The Sixto Serrano Brillantes, Jr. Financial Assistance Program (To be known as the Sixto-FAP) with Brackets 60, 30, and 10;
  • The Imelda Romualdez Marcos Sunken Garden of Truth, Goodness, and All Things Beautiful;and
  • The Zobel de Ayala Public-Private-Partnership University of the Philippines

Happy Alcoholy Week, Pilipinas!

holy-combatDedicated sa lahat ng sinungaling at manlolokong mapanlinlang na mga ipokritong relihiyosong banal na aso’t santong kabayong nagkalat sa Pilipinas (and you are Legion).

This song was actually written way back in 1996, but only got released as one of the tracks in our late 2007 album, ‘Whoa! Pilipinas!” It’ll never get aired, of course, so share-share ko na lang sa inyo, hahaha.

NOTE: It was partly inspired by Nora Aunor’s character in the 1982 film classic, “Himala” (directed by the late Ishmael Bernal) and also by the early ’90s Agoo “miracles,” among so many other things (kasama na ang mga kahibangan ng matagal ko nang namayapang lola at ang mga katropa niya sa Samahang Sto. Nino!)

Three Dates and A Gate

Posted in I Miseducation with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , on 03/21/2009 by cabring

After two decades of suspense, it’s finally going down.

The UPIS gate, that is.

It’s been a roller coaster ride of “what ifs” and “what nots” that ends now in one of the most moderately anticipated, anti-climactic plot developments in the ongoing drama that is UPIS. But instead of a barrage of protests, what caps the saga is a grand alumni-organized picture-taking party before the bulldozers and jackhammers finally start mutilating the landscape of my beloved non-alma mater; all this to give way to a corrupt government’s road-widening pre-election papogi-points project.

The gate figures in three significant events in my life, so I’m going to reminisce in honor of its impending transplant several meters inwards of the school property’s soon to be gerrymandered frontage.
